I really would appreciate your help
new Ubuntu installation on ten yr old iMac computer. Wrote over iOS.

1). Once loaded I see four identical workspaces that are greyed out. so light in colour cannot read. Mouse click does activate things however cannot identify what I am opening. Cannot reduce to one workspace.

2). Upon booting up I get “failed to set MokListRT. Invalid parameter. “

I would reinstall and start over in a heartbeat. Big thank you for your help. New user. Excited to give this ago. Jay. London Ontario. 63 yrs old

[ubuntu] Issuer with "Old World Intel Mac" Graphics Support after 20.04 to 21.04 upgrade

Hi Folks,

I need to report an issue that I have observed when going through an upgrade from 10.04, to 20.10 (no issues observed here) but the 21.04 upgrade reports that the Radeon controller is unclaimed, and resolutions are locked at 1400 x 1050 when the correct screen resolution should be 1680 x 1050.

i.e. root@Old-iMac:/home/freddof# lshw -c video *-display UNCLAIMED <== <== <== THE MAIN ISSUE
description: VGA compatible controller
product: RV530/M56-P [Mobility Radeon X1600]
vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]

bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0

configuration: latency=0
resources: memory:c0000000-cfffffff ioport:2000(size=256) memory:d0400000-d040ffff memory:c0000-dffff

The only way that a non-corrupted login screen (at 1400 x 1050) can be obtained is by setting "nomodeset" in the GRUB2 Configration file.

There are still many of us that use Ubunto on "Old-World" macs. The 21.04 release is important as it is the only Ubuntu release that delivers Qt 5.15.2 support.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a short-term fix?

Yet I believe that patches to make this work may be in order - even for this old hardware - for some time.

Freddo

Only white screen when booting on Mac

Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro from 2012 with 16 gigs of RAM and 1 TB SSD storage.

I’m trying to installing Ubuntu 2.

But I can’t start Ubuntu after installing it.
I created a boot stick with Balina Etcher and I installed Ubuntu without any problems.

But when I try to start Ubuntu I can only see a white screen without any command prompt or Grub.

[SOLVED] MacBookPro 11,3 iGPU

Hello!

I'm completely new to linux. I just installed Ubuntu 21.04 on my MacbookPro as Apple announced that my Model would not be supported on the upcoming macOS Release.
Overall I am very happy with the Speed and Usability of the System. My only problem is, that Ubuntu does not recognize the iGPU of my model as the MacbookPro seems to shutdown the iGPU as soon as it recognizes booting into another sytem.

I tried the following.

https://github.com/0xbb/apple_set_os.efi

But it still does not show the iGPU via lspci. My problem is that is just do not know enough to go any further. I do not know how to study the problem.

I tried the changing the macOS version in the apple_set_os.efi file and compile it and I also tried different versions of changes to grub.d/40_custom

Any suggestions are welcome to further investigate my problem.

Love Ubuntu but my Macbook is just running hot in the current configuration.

Thank you all for your help.

Bricked MacBook Pro 4,1

MacBook 4,1 17inch screen vintage 2009. Sentimental value.

Symptoms - no screen, no chimes, no target mode, no means to boot and debug, also no dvd drive since a dvd got stuck.
Was ok run running macOS Maverick before I started trying out ubuntu 2020 which ran ok. Possibly zapped the hard drive while trying out usb grub.efi. Start can be heard running the hard drive, and trying for a dvd. The various starttup key combinations fail to help. A macos backup from last week on external usb ssd has no effect. Maybe this is a EFI firmware fault.

Suggestions welcome.

[grub] MacBook Pro 2016 Model A1707 (touchbar) - how to restore dual boot to windows

Hi.

I was trying out an Ubuntu Studio Live USB (Version 20.04.2 LTS Focal Fossa) on my MacBook Pro, which was configured for Bootcamp dual boot to Windows 10.

I ended up trying to install Ubuntu Studio onto another USB stick, which succeeded, but it also installed the grub boot loader on the boot partition.

Meaning, I can still boot to MacOS, but if I select the "Windows" partition, it just starts the grub boot loader, trying to load the Ubuntu install from the USB stick.

I tried to run the Boot Repair as outlined here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

But that didn't seem to change anything.

Here the Pastebin upload from the boot repair utility: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/PX3nMdyCvW/

How can I either remove grub and restore UEFI booting to the Bootcamp partition, or add a grub config line to do the same?

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

Impossible to install ubuntu on a Macbook pro

Hello everyone,

A friend gave me his old macbook pro (end of 2011 I believe). I had to change the hard drive since the old one was broken.
I tried to install Ubuntu with a bootable usb drive, but it won't boot. I even try to install windows 10 and MacOS Sierra, but same result. I heard something about a secureboot that is installed by default on every Macbook. Could it be the problem ?

I'm sorry if my questions are silly, I am usually just an user of our main computer at home (and English is my second language).

Any idea ?

[ubuntu] Failed to set MokListRT: Invalid Parameter - I am scuppered!

Hi all,

Really need some help.

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 4 days ago on an iMac 2008 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, as I'd heard was a fantastic upgrade I wanted to try.

Installed from USB.

First install= no wifi access; I ran software updates inside Ubuntu. Fixed wifi. Then Firefox froze desktop. Needed reboot.

On this reboot I got the following message, which persists. Sometimes boots to Ubuntu, sometimes just this message on screen and not further.

If I hold alt + R on powering up, I get a picture of EFI drive or Time Machine Drive (which is the only drive plugged in). I cannot boot my Mac OS :0(

I have checked the forums; there is one post of the below. Only resolve is a BIOS issue on a Dell machine but nothing else.

I'm not a coding / terminal expert, I'm a paramedic and want my Mac back. Please help!

"Failed to set MokListRT: Invalid Parameter
Could not create MokListRT: Invalid Parameter
Importing MOK state has failed: import mok_state() failed: Invalid Parameter
Continuing boot since secure mode is disabled"

Thanks everyone,

Mickie x

Help with setting up Ubuntu post-installation on MacBook Air 2020

Hello, hope you had a good time/day/week. If I can spare a bit of your time here, that will be greatly appreciated.

So, I have issues that needs fixing right away. I tried to troubleshoot as much as I could (apt-get, software store, software updater). I am connected to internet by tethering USB with my Samsung.

I need to see if I can get drivers for WiFi card, Bluetooth card, keyboard, and trackpad. They currently do not work or are not present. The MacBook model is Intel-based 2020 Air. I am currently using the external mouse and virtual keyboard, but not in long run. This “external mouse” is actually Steam controller.

Respond and I will do my best to answer any questions you may have for me. Thanks!

[ubuntu] PCI error on MacBookPro

$

I have an old MacBookPro 15'' from 2009 (says middle late). I installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS about two weeks ago. Everything was working all right but since yesterday it can't boot wither from disk or the Live CD.

The laptop was supposed to be for others as well. Therefor I did the following:
* made GRUB hidden
* Turned on Auto login
* Removed timer on selecting system/previous kernel
* installed NVidia drivers - interestingly, after installing the drivers, logo of the Ubuntu was replaced by NVidia splash :/

Yesterday, after login out, longing in and restarting the computer, the system stopped working. It hangs with black screen after showing Ubuntu logo again. When I try to boot it from Live USB, it shows the error:

```
[ 0.395456] pci 0000:02:00.0 error -61 assigning properties
[ 0.395456] pci 0000:02:00.0 error -61 assigning properties
```

I am afraid PCI error may indicate some hardware failure. This is an old laptop, which I almost gave up on but thought I would make it great again. If the computer is no longer usable, then I'll accept it but hope it is not the case.

Thanks.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu on Macbook Pro - touchpad sometimes doesn't work

I've just installed Ubuntu alongside MacOS on my Macbook Pro. I'm new to Linux and I'm looking forward to make a full transition to it - but I'm firstly learning to use it and solve some of the issues I find.

However, sometimes the trackpad doesn't work when booting Ubuntu. The trackpad doesn't respond (but the keyboard is always fine) and I need to plug a USB mouse in order to control the cursor.

My Kernel version is `5.11.0-31-generic`. I already tried the solution provided in https://unix.stackexchange.com/quest...with-dual-boot but I got the error:
Quote:

Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.11.0-31-generic (x86_64) Consult /var/lib/dkms/applespi/0.1/build/make.log for more information.
If it helps, my `hwinfo` gives to the keyboard:

Hi

Just replaced original hdd with ssd and went to install Linux. On loading install from USB, the screen was duplicated 4 ways and cannot read the text. Still managed to install linux fully, but the problem persists after taking off screen several times to check all connections and restarting. Is it a connection issue or software eg driver issue? photo attached. Thanks for any ideas to help. I can probably use Terminal if needed...

Hello everyone,

So I just recently installed Ubuntu on an external HDD in the mindset that I could use it on different machine. While I use it on mt desktop pc, everything is good, but when I try to use it with my macbook, then it dosen t work. When I boot it up I pressed the option key to select the boot option, then I have 2 choices either the Macintosh HD which I have my MacOs on and there is an EFI boot (wich I presumed is the external HDD). The problem is that when I try to boot it, nothing happen. Its just a black screen and I couldn t find anything online. Please help me with this, I have to use it for school and its a real pain right now.

Thanks in advance.

reinstall macos after ubuntu

Not really a ubuntu question, sorry, but I was hoping someone here could help me.

I have a macbook pro retina 13'' 2015 and have ubuntu installed. Now my daughter has inherited the machine, and she greatly prefers the original MacOS. I'd like to reinstall MacOS Big Sur.

AFAIU I should create a bootable big sur usb, and also (perhaps using that) reformat my harddrive to APFS (apple's file system) (and rename the disk to Macintosh HD). I think gparted can do macos file system extended but not APFS.

Can anyone help me direct me how I can go about this? I do have access to a mac with macos installed if that is helpful.

Thanks!

[ubuntu] Can't instal on old Mac mini

I have recently come across in the back of a cupboard a Mac mini circa 2007 stuck in the world of OsX leopard. A long time ago I managed a major project based on Sunos which was a Berkley Unix derivative so I thought I would try installing Linux and get some use out of the old box.
Then discovered my grandson, about to start a CyberCypto degree at warwick who could make use of a Linux standalone.
Following what I found on the net I downloaded Etcher and installed it on my MacBook.
I then downloaded ubuntu-21.04-desktop-amd64 and used it with Etcher to build bootable USD. The Mac didn't recognise it as a bootable source when I started the startup manager.
Had a brainwave "the machine may be only 32 bit and the bistro is probably 64 so tried again with an olde version, used 15.04, still no joy.
Next step was to put the .iso on a dvd, then start the Mac booting from the DVD drive, this worked until it came up with choose which installation 1 or 2.
The only keyboard I have is bluetooth, although I did try one with a USB plug but nether produced any reaction.
Where do I go form here
HELP please

Hy everybody,

I just installed Ubuntu 20.04 in dual boot on my iMac 27" mid 2011 (Mac OS High Sierra). But now it always automatically starts up in Ubuntu, unless I hit my option key, then I can choose between Ubuntu en Mac OS. Is het possible one way or the other to get that choice every time I power up my iMac without pushing that option key?

Many thanks for your answers!

Installed Ubuntu on iMac 2009 4GB Ram 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

I installed Ubuntu from a USB drive. It asked me for my name and info, went through the install. It said to "restart" the computer, I did. then it said to with draw the media and hit enter. Again did that. When the computer restarted it makes the sound of restarting then the screen is just white. Nothing happens. After a few minutes it restarts itself and again nothing happens.

I have re-installed it twice.

Any ideas on what I can do? Should I re-install again?

I gather this is not a new issue at all, and I've attempted to follow all the steps I've seen here and elsewhere (involving Pulse Audio, etc). I've attempted the standard Ubuntu install, Mint, Elementary, and Manjaro, and none have an audio.

If someone could advise on next steps or what information I can provide to be helpful, I'd be very grateful.

Thank you!

[ubuntu] MacBook Air vs Grub and Windows - Cannot boot up Windows

Hi,

Ive just wiped all of Apple stuff out of my Macbook Air Mid2012 for private purposes.

What i have done, was to install clean installation of Windows.
Then i installed ubuntu along with windows on separate partition.

Under macos 'bootloader' i can see only "EFI BOOT". After clicking it, ususal GRUB is being loaded.
I can freely run ubuntu without any issues, but after choosing Windows two things take place:

1. Sometimes only black screen is displayed, no reaction on anything
2. Sometimes, after choosing windows in GRUB, it gets back to GRUB without loading anything.

Windows created EFI partition, where also ubuntu has its bootloader.

Ive tried to use boot-repair tool, but with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
