How can I boot Ubuntu on a USB stick and a Mac I can't modify? So I can't use rEFIt. I tried a USB drive I formated with usb-creator-gtk, I've been testing it with a late 2007 Macbook and it won't boot it. What Live USB install method should I use?

I'm taking a LAMP server admin class and for reason out of teachers control with are in the Graphics lab with all iMacs. Yes I can use xterm in Mac, but I use Ubuntu on all of my own computers and it's driving me crazy. The teacher said it would be cool if I booted my own OS on a USB drive.
