[SOLVED] Cannot open alsamixer

Hi, on Lubuntu 14.04 LTS upgraded from 13.10, I cannot open alsamixer. In the terminal I get:

alsa-utils is installed.

alsamixer is present at /usr/bin/alsamixer

I have removed, purged, reinstalled, rebooted. No joy.

I am in the audio group and I do have permission to use audio.

Any help gratefully received.
