[xubuntu] Apple Macbook Pro Upgrade Advice? Switch back to PC? Help!?

Hello all.

I am looking for a little advice here. I have a 2012 Apple Macbook Pro 6,2. It works fine under OS X/Windows 7 and I am generally very happy with it. I have Xubuntu installed on it and have had for years. 97% of the time I use the Macbook, it's under Linux. It's my "every day" work computer, used for a wide range of stuff. However, it drives me mad with the Nouveau open source driver for the Nvidia video card (01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT216M [GeForce GT 330M] (rev a2)).

I understand that since Apple updates changed the BIOS to UEFI only, the problem has existed since the proprietary Nvidia driver doesn't support UEFI properly. I have battled on like this for about 18 months, but I have had enough. I cannot get this working properly (it used to with BIOS mode), and I have decided to upgrade.

The question is this. If I buy a new MacBook Pro, with fancy retina screen, will the graphics drivers work properly again with Ubuntu? Or should I buy a Dell machine and go back to a more conventional PC. I would prefer to stay with Apple (solid physical construction, invested equipment, video adapters, etc), but I really don't need problems! I want an easy life running Linux, where my computer returns from Suspend!

Reports of users running Ubuntu on newer Apple products would be greatly received, as would other experiences.

With kind regards

George Smart
