2013 Mac Pro + Ubuntu...

Hi all,

I've been playing with Ubuntu on a partition on my 2013 Mac Pro (cylinder/trash can model) - per the notes on Ubuntus site, using nomodeset option, it will happily boot up and work. The negative being that I have literally no GPU acceleration (hell, even glxgears gives better performance on my lenovo X250 then it does when Ubuntu is natively booted on the '13 Mac Pro). Ok - so my question is - has anyone been able to get the AMD drivers (proprietary or open source) to work so it actually boots into Unity (or any other DE for that matter) ad doesn't sit frozen?

I can obviously install in a VM, but I'd really like to have the full power of the GPU (dual D700's, in Windows they are recognized as 7900 model GPUs) and CPU within linux if at all possible ;). I'm sure that there are so few that have this type of Mac Pro that would be putting linux on it that it's not even on the radar for developers, but I was hoping someone might have a trick or suggestion to try?
