[other] Booting to Grub2 Command Line

I'm super new to Ubuntu, hence my choice of forum (hopefully the right one), so far, what I've done is I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 on an external hard drive, as there wasn't space on my internal hard drive. My computer runs OSX, the most recent version of Mavericks.

So the deal is, when I start up without the external hard drive (containing Ubuntu) connected, it boots straight to the Grub2 command line. From there I can just use 'exit' and it will boot into osx, or alternately, while starting up I can hold option and then select to boot from the internal hard drive, bypassing Grub2.
When I start up with the external hard drive connected, I get a Grub2 menu similar to all the others I've seen, with a choice of operation systems to load.
Its probably also worth mentioning that my internal drive only has OSX installed on it. Bearing that in mind, I was wondering about this.

Does Grub2 boot directly to command line as there is only one OS to choose from?

That seems intuitively wrong to me, but perhaps I am mistaken, and it is the conclusion that I arrived at.

I was also wondering what it would take for me to boot my Ubuntu drive on another machine. I'm assuming that machine would have to run Grub2, but is it possible to have Grub2 run from the same hard drive, so that its easily portable?
If not, is it possible to run a live usb grub, and boot from that?

Thanks a bunch in advance, please let me know if I need to clarify anything, add more information to something, or perhaps split these two questions into different posts.

P.S. I have a live Ubuntu (14.04) Usb, I wasn't sure if it was necessary to add that information, or where to do it, hence it ending up here.
