[ubuntu] Is there a reason why I can't/shouldn't install the latest LTS on an old macbook pro?

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro, hardware version 5.1. I see on the wiki all the releases listed for my hardware are Ubuntu Desktop versions 10 or 11. What the wiki's don't explicitly address is my question of why can't I just install the most recent LTS, 14.04? Is it a matter of the newer versions not having the right drivers included? Or will the newer versions outright now work or not be stable in comparison to the recommended versions on the mactel wiki pages?

Thanks,

Randy
