Unable to Boot OS X After Removing Ubuntu 16.04 Partition Installed Via EFI

I need to use Ubuntu to build a project. Using a vm wasn't working, so I decided to dual boot Sierra and Ubuntu 16.04 using this guide for dual booting OS X with Ubuntu 15.05 (http://courses.cms.caltech.edu/cs171...and_Ubuntu.pdf).

I was surprised to find that I didn't need to follow the guide's later steps in order to make Ubuntu bootable. I was able to boot into OS X by doing a regular install on a partition I created for Ubuntu, and then holding down the option key at startup and selecting "Macintosh HD" as my startup disk.

At this point there weren't any problems, but afterwards I found out that I needed to install Ubuntu 14.04 instead of 16.04 and that and the partition I had created for Ubuntu was too small. I wasn't able to remove the Ubuntu 16.04 partition from OS X's Disk Utility (a warning sign, maybe), but I booted up a Ubuntu 14.04 live cd using gparted. Afterwards I wanted to resize my OS X partition but Ubuntu wasn't able to resize my hsf+ partition, so I tried to boot back into OS X. At that point I discovered that I could no longer boot into OS X from the startup options menu.

I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 over the partition I originally had 16.04 on, but that's the only operating system I can boot to right now. The Ubuntu partition boots automatically, but Machintosh HD doesn't show up as an option when I boot up holding down the option key.

Any advice on how to boot into my OS X partition now? Doing a network recovery is an option I think, but I'm worried about losing files I have installed on my OS X partition. I'm not super familiar with the boot process but it'd be interesting in learning.
