Post install black screen with blinking cursor. (Dual-boot on 2010 Macbook)

Trying to work on my first dual boot computer and attempting to make it work on an older Macbook I have.

I was working through the guides here:
https://www.howtogeek.com/187410/how...inux-on-a-mac/
http://www.daveoncode.com/2015/05/26...etina-display/

(Was originally trying Linux Mint, then tried just normal Ubuntu 16.04 with same results)

I partitioned my Mac and set up rEFInd so that I can choose where to boot to.

I can boot up the install USB drive fine, the live OS will render, or i can jump to install immediately. I install Ubuntu to a partition, give it a swap area, set the boot loader to the Linux partition, let it install.

The install drive does boot to the BIOS purple accessibility screen as opposed to the black grub screen if that is helpful (I read that somewhere, not sure of the sigificance but figured it might be helpful).

The problem is that after install, rEFInd will open, I'll choose Ubuntu to boot and I get a black screen with a blinking cursor.

From what I have read, it sounds like its a graphic card problem. I have an Nvidia card in my Mac (model version 7,1).

However, all the fixes I've read about here (http://askubuntu.com/questions/16207...have-to-fix-it) involve hitting an option on the grub menu, or using a hotkey command to open something. Since I don't get a menu, and any hot keys combo I tried don't work on the black screen I can't try any of these solutions.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.
