Can Ubuntu "recognize" and use the numeric keypad on apple kybd?

I have the Apple Keyboard that's a thin strip of aluminum with the uniform square keys..short-travel keys, and this keyboard has the numeric keypad..which Ubuntu and applications running under it do not see, recognize or use.

Be very nice to change this..is it possible?
