I am a GNU Emacs user and recently starting using Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, as shown here:

I am running Ubuntu under VMware Fusion on my Mac.
This came with GNOME 3.28.2, FWIW.
I would like to remap the left command on my Mac to be the Meta key in GNU Emacs, but when I tap the left command key it brings up this annoying "search" feature and all the current windows go small. I hate that thing. Just tell me how to get my Meta key back!
I did some web searching but did not find anything readily actionable.
