[ubuntu] Projector cannot find source

Using Ubuntu 12.04 and continuing replaced by Ubuntu 12.10, my MacBook Air 2011 (which has no Apple software) won't connect with a borrowed projector.

I have a LibreOffice Impress presentation to give to a club and I've borrowed the club's projector and VGA lead to make sure everything works. Unfortunately, the projector gives the message "no source found." The projector and lead work for other people using standard laptops with common presentation software.

What I've tried: the connections seem tight; I've turned the laptop on first; I've turned the projector on first; and I've looked through the projector's menu settings and they seem right.

The laptop and the projector aren't connecting and I don't know what to try next. I've no easy alternative to using my Apple laptop and Ubuntu. Can anyone please give me a pointer here?
