Disconnected - you are now offline

I just installed ubuntu 15.04 on a 2009 macbook air (it only has wifi, no ethernet port). Everything is working fine except ever since I've first logged in, I have gotten this message "Network disconnected - you are now offline". I have almost no knowledge on how to troubleshoot issues like this, but what I do know is that when I go to 'System Settings>Software & Updates>Additional Drivers' under "Broadcom Corporation: BCM4321 802.11a/b/g/n (AirPort Extreme)" (That's the wireless chip) it says "This device is using an alternative driver" and under that there is a checked box saying " Using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA Wireless driver source from bcmwl-kernel-source (proprietary)" and an unchecked box saying "Do not use the device". How do I get the wifi working?
