Macbook Pro 8,3 with Cosmic

I successfully got Ubuntu installed on my old 8,3.
Firstly, there are no instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MactelSupportTeam for this combination. I thought that I could write something but I have neither the permissions or enough posts to do anything about it.
For the benefit of others this is how I did it.

1. My DVD drive wasn't working so I bought a caddy and put a second drive in it. So I have OSX on the normal drive and Ubuntu on the other. I can use the Option key when I hear the boot up noise to choose which one.

2. I used the ubuntu server ISO image

3. As it boots I hit the E key to edit the boot up options.
I changed
Code:

set gfxpayload=keep
to
Code:

set gfxpayload=text
I changed
Code:

linux /casper/vmlinuz boot=casper quiet ---
to
Code:

linux /casper/vmlinuz boot=casper adeon.modeset=0 i915.modeset=1 i915.lvds_channel_mode=2 ---
Hit F10 to boot

4. After installation I connected to Ethernet and rebooted

5. When ubuntu comes up you can't see the screen, so I found the IP address of the Macbook in my routers DHCP table and ssh into it.

6. Edit /etc/grub.d/10_linux
add these lines
Code:

echo "    outb 0x728 1" | sed "s/^/$submenu_indentation/"
echo "    outb 0x710 2" | sed "s/^/$submenu_indentation/"
echo "    outb 0x740 2" | sed "s/^/$submenu_indentation/"
echo "    outb 0x750 0" | sed "s/^/$submenu_indentation/"

before the line that says echo " insmod gzio" | sed "s/^/$submenu_indentation/"

These lines disable the GPU so from now on only the HD3000 graphics built into the processor will work (which is what I want)

run
Code:

update-grub
reboot

7. Install the GUI that you like, in my case that's
Code:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install lxqt xinit

But most people will probably prefer a more conventional window manager than LXQT, but I really like it.

to get wifi working
Code:

apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
I still need to tune my installation. Problems still to solve
Can't adjust baclight brightness.
Keyboard doesn't illuminate
Can't right click on the mouse pad.

Anyway I think that there are solutions to all of these things; I just need to google and experiment

[all variants] Hibernate does not restore session

Hey :). I use a MacBook Pro Late 12, Ubuntu 18.04, i3wm and I have configured 12 Gb of swap (thats 1.5x my RAM size).

Unfortunately when my laptop tries to hibernate (like with sudo pm-hibernate) it just turns off completely and when I boot again it does not restore the session. I tried out several things, I even installed Manjaro in dual boot, but its just the same in manjaro. I could post a lot of my outputs, but I don't know which is important. I can easily add more stuff if requested.

iMAC boot disaster need help!!!!!

hi

I know i messed up i dont to be told what i have done.

iMAC osx installed ---> on boot held opt key to get imac boot options booted off ubuntu 18.04 lts uefi -----> live cd ---> gpart deleted osx uefi partition ---> deleted osx recovery partition ---->

--> apple wireless mouse and kb did not work had to plug in usb keyboard and mouse to go to bluetooth settings and add them ----> now they work in UBUNTU ----> ubuntu install partition uefi boot partition / grub partition / swap and root (/)... installed ubuntu all working fine...

but now apple keyboard opt does not obviously bring boot options anymore, no grub appears to run recovery mode (not sure if there is a boot from cd/dvd option anyway)

i thought that opt cmd and o and f, brought up imac firmware where you could change boot options but nothing.

ubuntu is not playing well with my imac. problem is i cant boot off anything other than ubuntu and it that does wrong then nothing will boot.

i need to some how get ubuntu to offer a boot off external media ie my mac osx dvd then i could reinstall osx and get the thing working probably will dual boot.

but how do i fix this mess.

many many thx to anyone who could help.

[ubuntu] Was away for 3 months; just installed 3 months of updates; now boots but won't login

Using Ubuntu 14.04. Was away for 3 months, so computer was not used during that period. Just returned, booted up computer and installed 3 months of updates. After installing all, the usual message came that need to shut down and reboot to complete install of all updates. When I shut the computer down and tried to reboot, it rebooted fine and came to the login screen. It accepts the password, but then does not come to the desktop. It just again gives me the login screen. I tried putting in a wrong password, and it recognizes that pw as wrong. When I put in the correct password, it recognizes that as correct, but as mentioned just comes back to the login screen rather than coming to the desktop. Will be very grateful for help with the solution.

[ubuntu] Seemingly long boot, Ubuntu 18.04.

I'm fairly comfortable with linux. I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 on a Macbook Pro 5 (2009), single OS on an SSD with 8gb of ram. It runs great but I feel that the boot is slow. When I turn off the quiet splash and watch the commands go by it gets to the end and seems to pause longer than it should. Maybe I'm wrong. I know that these run concurrently, but I'n wondering something is out of place.

Can someone please look at this and tell me what you think?

Hello together,

I,m new to unix systems!

I tried lubuntu in a vm.
Host system is a mac with highsierra 2.7gh quadcore with 16gb ram and 500gb ssd

at the First Boot everything looks good - the system ask my for several settings- everything fine
at the Secend boot i just see stripes after the boot screen.

I my opinion the problem is caused by the graphik driver.
is there a way to update the driver bevore the graphik interface is shown?

Any other solutions?

thanks
Julian

[ubuntu] Installing Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on MBP 5,2 (mid 2009)

I use a MBP 5,2 (from mid 2009), and would like to install Ubuntu 18.04 on it. Any experience or suggestions for this. I have installed 9.04 and then 14.04 on it in the past, and the techniques I used are detailed below. As 14.04 installed in a routine manner just as on a PC, I am wondering whether that may be the case for 18.04 as well?

Here is my hardware:
MBP 5,2
Ram 8 GB 1067 DDR3
2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
NVIDIA Ge Force 9400M/9600M GT

History of 9.04 and 14.04 installs on this computer:

I initially installed Ubuntu 9.04 on it back in 2009, then 14.04 in 2014, and now would like to install 18.04 om it. There were some issues with the 9.04 install and I ultimately used rEFit to get it done. In 2014, the 14.04 went really smoothly: I used the regular 64-bit 14.04 iso. (NOT the MAC 64-bit), and rEFIt was not needed at all. I allocated drive space using the installation usb, just like one would do on a PC, and everything went incredibly smoothly. I did need to set the boot to nomodeset for the liveusb, and I had to do it for the first boot into Ubuntu. Once I booted in and installed the NVIDIA driver, it was no longer needed. To install the NVIDIA driver, I just typed "Additional Drivers" in the dash and the tool came up right away for installing it.

[ubuntu] Second Monitor (MiniDisplayPort - HDMI) Blacking Out Intermittently

I recently added a second monitor using a MiniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter on my (late 2014) Mac Mini running Ubuntu 18.10. The screen normally works fine, but will once in a while go black for a few second and then turn back on. This wasn't too much of a problem, but now it's doing it like every minute or two, which is really frustrating me now lol.
I read that refresh rates often cause this, and that xrandr can help me, but I am new to linux and don't exactly know where to start. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.
Thanks, Trevor

Have an older iMac that rejects 64-bit Ubuntu but seems OK with 32-bit Kubuntu

Hi.

Well its hard to explain but i have a problem when install any ppc distro for this 2 "macs".

Let me explain.

I havent a blank disk so i used a USB drive for that; the case is... i've download a "ubuntuPPC.iso" by example, and i used the Disk Utility for put it in the usb, well that was easy, i go to openfirmware Opt+Apple+F+O and make a devalias for usb bla bla bla etc. When using the command boot ud:/install/yaboot it goes to a black screen, then it shows me a error like this

/pci@f2000000/usb@1b/disk@1 yaboot.conf unknow or corrupt filesystem.

I tried with other distro, it gives me the same screen, recently i've installed succesfully a "Ubuntu 12.04 installation" on my Ibook G4, but when i try to make a new installation it gives me the same yaboot error, i tried with replacing the usb yaboot file with another yaboot files on other distros, it gives me the same error ¡Again!

¿What should I do in this scenario?

My PowerBook G4 has a recently 10.5 leopard installation and anyway it gives me that yaboot error. My Ibook G4 haved 10.4 Tiger installed, deleted by Ubuntu when install.

I really apreciate you help guys.

Macbook Ubuntu Splash Screen

Hello all, I am new here but I have been using Linux for 6 years, I actually completed most of my school work on Mint. I recently decided to install an Ubuntu based distro, Pop OS, onto my Macbook. It is an 09 Macbook 13", It's been project of mine because I replaced the key pad, screen, battery, upgraded the RAM, and added an SSD. I chose Pop OS because it is basically Ubuntu with some visual and under the hood changes - nothing that I don't think would make it too far from Ubuntu.

The issue; No boot screen, splash screen, or whatever you would call it. While this is not a huge thing, I would like to get it back if I can. Some distro's will show a splash screen (Deepin and a few others). All distro's start with a black, but lit, screen. So I know it's doing something as the display is almost gray rather than black, but it never get's a chance to display the splash.

Does anyone have any thought's or input?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Clean install Ubuntu and New Hard Drive -only problems Help!

I've had an old Macbook Pro laying around for years. A relative gave it to me and asked me to fix it. She neglected to give a me a power supply and after repeated requests we both forgot about it. Was rummaging in my computer storage closet and decided to buy a supply and see what the story was. Got the "?" screen at boot. Tried a few things and decided the HD was dead. Rummaged around and found a drive, opened up the computer and NO Hard Drive! THE HD I had had Win XP istalled so I wiped it and tried to install 19.04 -- Its been days and I have not made much progress. The computer is a Macbook PRO from mid 2007. Silver lit keyboard, very attractive.

I'm using a USB with UNbootlin ubuntu 19.04 64 bit on it. I can boot the live version if I use the safe graphics mode only. I have installed and reinstalled a number of times, always shows "Ubuntu" then goes to a black screen flashing cursor. I've read all kinds of directions, have tried resetting Grub partition info, created a EFI partition and no luck.

Can someone point me to step by step directions on how to install when you do not have a hd with OS on it? I have ZERO experiance wiht Apple products, just want to use this as a laptop in my bedroom for occasional use. Honestly it should not be this hard.

Live USB Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS hangs on Mac

EDIT: After researching a lot more, Ubuntu supports the newer macbooks poorly, I'm supposed to use a USB mouse, but thats not an option due to a few reasons I shouldn't have to get into, is there a way to use the command line, and install drivers directly from there?

Hey guys,

I'm not an Ubuntu wiz, so please bear with me in this.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro 2017 no touch bar. I've made the boot usb and made my partition.
The tutorial I'm following makes us install reFinD after installation, so I booted into my USB through the mac's default boot thing, by pressing option on boot.

I chose the option where you try ubuntu before installing it, everything opens up, once it does, I can't do anything, cant move my mouse, type anything, the live ubuntu session doesn't show any signs of responsiveness.

Is this a driver issue, should I just go on about installing Ubuntu. Because I don't want to have to face this situation once I install it.

Thanks in advance, Much love <3

Ubuntu 19.04, MacBook Air 6,2 No Wifi

Hi everyone,

I just installed Ubuntu 19.04 on a MBA 6,2 following this tutorial: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookAir6-2/Saucy

Problem is, that WiFi seems not to work.

Software & Updates App -> Additional Drivers says, that is is using the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source from ... and Settings app says, that No Wi-Fi Adapter was found.

I searched this forum and found this thread with a linked script to make this problem a little easier to debug. Here is the output from my machine.

Code:

The working ethernet connection is because of a running USB-Gigabit Adapter, which works without any problems.

Would be great if someone could support me with this.

unable to get BCM4360 [14e4:43a0] (rev 03) Broadcom wifi working (guide followed)

I have been trying to get wifi working on a mac booting from Disco or Bionic livecds (from a multi boot usb stick) without success. There already seems to be a [restricted] driver listed in additional drivers which I have tried and failed to get to work, so have been trying via terminal, also without success. This is a tri-boot macbook, and before I broke my Ubuntu installation I had Wily installed (not live cd) running quite happily with wifi.
So, here is what I have tried via terminal:

Code:

it@it:~$ sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
…
Package 'bcmwl-kernel-source' is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
it@it:~$ sudo apt-get install /media/it/SharedDrive/dkms_2.6.1-4ubuntu1_all.deb

Note, selecting 'dkms' instead of '/media/it/SharedDrive/dkms_2.6.1-4ubuntu1_all.deb'

########## wireless info END ############

One thing that I did notice was that b43 and bcm43xx seem to be blacklisted as shown in wireless-info.txt

I can't find my thunderbolt ethernet connector, so I really want to get wifi running on the live cd before proceeding further. I have added the full wireless-info.txt and terminal outputs as attachments, but have truncated them slightly above.
thank you.

[ubuntu_mate] MacBook Pro: Windows 10 unable to boot after installing MATE 18.04.2 LTS

Hello there. I tried searching around the forums for a bit and also found seemingly no dupes with the editor's 'check if posted' feature, so here I go.

I own a mid-2012 MacBook Pro ("9,2"?) currently housing macOS Mojave 10.14.4 and Windows 10 Pro (prior to this installation of Ubuntu MATE 18.04.2 LTS), and the two worked just fine. However, after I tried installing Ubuntu MATE by referring to this answer on triple-booting (except that it's "HFS" against my current "APFS", so I kinda followed suit), I ended up with four choices in the Startup Manager from left to right: "Windows, EFI Boot, MACINTOSH HD, EFI Boot". Choosing the former EFI Boot (not bootable USB drive) instantly restarts my laptop, while the latter EFI Boot is the Ubuntu MATE I had just installed and added an icon on.

When I choose the Windows one, the whole thing gets stuck at the "Missing operating system" message, but my macOS and Ubuntu seem to work fine. I have tried Boot-Repair's 'Recommended Repair', and what I got was this message:
https://imgur.com/a/n7BlWR8 (NOTE: vertically long)

now I have GParted installed in my Ubuntu, but it somehow reads my laptop's HDD capacity as 465.76 GB, as opposed to the actual 500 GB. Putting that 34 GB difference aside, I don't know where to go from there since I'm not knowledgeable with disk/partition stuffs and this is practically my first time using Ubuntu. I had screwed up big time trying to get the vanilla (non-flavor) Ubuntu coexist in my laptop too, so I started over and I'd like to feel much more assured this time. How do I get rid of my Windows' "missing operating system" message from this point, and be able to get all three OS'es boot up perfectly anytime I want through MacBook's Start-up Manager? Feedback is much appreciated. Thanks for your attention.

here is the Pastebin report generated by Boot-Repair:

and here is a link to a few photos of the disk's insides and whatnot in macOS's Terminal, including descriptions on each photo:

[ubuntu] 19.04 on 2017 MacBook Air - Anything I should be concerned with?

Hello all,

I have a 2017 MacBook Air (basically identical to the 2015 model) and I've just wiped the drive and installed Disco Dingo. I managed to get the wireless working by manually downloading broadcom-sta-dkms.deb on another computer and copying it over (then running the installer, of course). Otherwise, most everything worked out of the box (I have yet to tackle the webcam, which is not working).

My question is this: I know Apple stuff presents issues for developers. Is there anything that I should be concerned about when running Ubuntu as my daily driver on this machine? Heat? Spontaneous explosions?

Thanks,
Andrew B.
P.S. Hats off to the Ubuntu/Gnome teams. This is very pretty.
