[ubuntu] Ubuntu on a mac a1181, wifi look connected but no internet or IP

$

Hi guys, I recently tried to bring an old mac a1181 back to life with linux, everything looks good, but I discovered that the wifi although it said to be connected had no internet.

The wifi board model is BCM4321, I tried several drivers and several methods that I saw on the internet but none of them solved my problem.

Can you guys help me fix my problem?

Thanks.

MacBook Pro 2016: 13” detected as 15”

On a vanilla install of Ubuntu 21.10, boot is in a video mode with 2880 vertical pixels, not the real 2560x1600

Impact: at the bottom of the display are 6–12 invisible lines, and during boot and console work, the cursor is below the bottom of the screen

Root cause: the computer is detected as MacBookPro13,3 (2016 15” 2880x1800) when it is MacBookPro13,2 (2016 13” 2560x1600)

It appears impossible to change the video mode in grub, there is only one device and it only has one mode. edid seems to claim that the display supports both 2560x1400 and 2880x1800 which is false
The dumb thing of course picks 2880x1800

I have noticed that linux-hardware.org probes incorrectly lists the computer as MacBookPro13,3

Question:
Can the video mode be changed somehow?
Should some other reconfiguration take place to get to 2560x1600

after boot, one can find:

[ubuntu] Need to partition an SSD full of /dev/loops

Hello to one and all, I'm stumped.

Trying to install 20.04 on an old MacBook Air for a friend and on her drive I have found something very similar to this;

Code:

sudo fdisk -l

Disk /dev/loop15: 3.7 MiB, 3821568 bytes, 7464 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disk /dev/loop16: 54.6 MiB, 57274368 bytes, 111864 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disk /dev/loop17: 140.7 MiB, 147501056 bytes, 288088 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disk /dev/loop18: 14.8 MiB, 15462400 bytes, 30200 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disk /dev/loop19: 42.8 MiB, 44879872 bytes, 87656 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

My problem is that using Gparted from a live USB drive I can't see any partitions to work with.

How can I get rid of all these 'loops' and be able partition the SSD so as to install 20.04?

Ubuntu vs. macOS - how to manage startup default?

I posted this thread twice by mistake; is there some way I can delete this one? (When I clicked "Submit New Thread", nothing seemed to happen for a while, so I pressed ⌘-period, and the little spinner in the tab stopped. Then I clicked "Submit New Thread" again and it posted. Then I saw it had been posted twice, so looked for how to delete this first one, but couldn't find a way.)

Ubuntu vs. macOS - how to manage startup default?

After 34 years in the Macintosh environment (never used Windows), reading about Linux for ~15 years (wanting to get into it but slowed by chronic illness), I'm finally starting to learn about it. So I've installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS in a partition on my second MacBook Pro (13" 2014, 11,1), alongside several versions of macOS (using 10.12 Sierra as my primary).

I've also installed rEFInd, started learning about it, but ran into some trouble, so removed it.

I know I can switch between macOS and Ubuntu by pressing option during startup, then selecting whichever I want. For now I'm still mostly working in macOS, so have it set in Startup Disk Preference Pane as the default startup.

However, if I start up in Ubuntu, then restart or shut down and start again, it defaults to Ubuntu. (In rEFInd terminology, a "boot coup".) I've experimented, repeatedly resetting macOS in Startup Disk, but every time I start Ubuntu, it takes over the default spot. (I'm not sure if it was doing this before I installed rEFInd, or started doing it only after I began using rEFInd. Anyway it's continued after I deleted rEFInd.)

Is there some way I can tell Ubuntu not to do this?

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 21.1 on Mac Mini Bluetooth gone

I have been running Ubuntu on Mac Mini 2010 natively. After upgrading to 21.1 Bluetooth is no longer available in Gnome. Checking status in terminal using sudo status Bluetooth says its running. Tried sudo restart Bluetooth and that made no difference at all. Gnome settings claim there is no Bluetooth but there was before the upgrade. I am new to Linux and don’t know what to try next. Thanks

My aim is to extend the lifecycle of 'vintage' Apple machines with PowerPC processor (G4 and G5). I tried several releases (12.04.4 and newer) with no success. I would like to give these old machines a second life by offering access to the modern internet (https sites). Who can help? Thanks.

[ubuntu] Discrete and integrated graphics switched around?

$

I installed Ubuntu 22.04 on my iMac 12,2 (mid 2011 I think). It looks absolutely awesome.

But I might have found a problem. As far as I can tell, the IGP and discrete GPU are switched around so Ubuntu uses my IGP when I choose to run something with discrete graphics. Thus, it runs most things on the AMD GPU by default :-o

Steam is set up to start with discrete graphics automatically, thus it uses the IGP unless I click to start it with integrated graphics.

I suspect this is opposite to the intended behavior and may just be an Apple quirk that needs to be addressed in a bug report.

But first - has anyone else run into this? How do I provide the proper information needed for the developers to fix it?

(In other news: Cheese has pretty serious artifacts when using the webcam, but taken photos look normal. I think this bug is underway to be fixed though.)

[ubuntu_budgie] Need help with screen freezes / dual Nvidia GPU / MacBook Pro 15'' Mid 2009

$

Hi there,

I need some help here with my MacBook Pro 15'' Mid 2009, 8 GB RAM, Dual Nvidia GPU (9400M / 9600 GT). A few days ago I installed the latest Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 on my old MacBook Pro. The installation went smoothly (using a USB stick). I'm pretty sure it is an EFI installation (I read something that it might be important to install as BIOS mode, although I have no clue what's the difference), because upon startup it says "EFI".

My problem is the following: After firing up the GUI (Budgie, lightdm) and starting some apps (Firefox, Libre Office), the screen freezes. Sometimes after quite a while it recovers, but mostly the screen hangs and doesn't come to live again.

After reading some articles in the net I discovered that the problem might be the dual GPUs combined with the nouveau drivers. And I believe it to be true, because after logging in to the console (my Mac is set to multi-user.target for the moment), there is always an error message on the prompt:

Code:

[  57.158707] nouveau 0000:02:00.0: up: init failed, -2
[  57.158789] nouveau 0000:02:00.0: bcp: init failed, -2

After some research I found this command and executed it:

Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i "VGA\|'Kern'\|3D\|Display" -A2
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation G96CM [GeForce 9600M GT] [10de:0647] (rev a1)
Subsystem: Apple Inc. G96CM [GeForce 9600M GT] [106b:00bc]
    Kernel driver in use: nouveau
--
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400M] [10de:0863] (rev b1)
    Subsystem: Apple Inc. C79 [GeForce 9400M] [106b:00bb]
    Kernel driver in use: nouveau

I'm no expert, but it seems to me, that nouveau has problems with the Nvidia 9600M GT GPU ("02:00.0")

I found this article (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia) and installed nvidia-340, but the drivers doesn't seem to be active.

Can you help me here? What do I have to do to fix this?

Thanks in advance :-)

PC: 2015 Mac Mini, 1 T space, 8 gig memory
SW: 20.04 Ubuntu Server

Hi,
I am new to ubuntu server, learning as I have go along. Downloading and installing was no problem. Whole drive was used.
wifi, ethernet cable used. As I have learned more information, I could not figure out how to do it in the context of the server so I would reinstall the SW again. So I have installed the sever SW many times a and everything worked until lately.
I am planning to install LAMP so I can study databases. Everything has worked fine until I decided to change it again.
I wanted to add security so I reinstalled everything again and it would not recognize my password. I thought it may be my keyboard so I purchased another one but that was not it.
Maybe my HD is damaged but there is a check done before installing? Maybe someone has gotten into my system?
Honestly, I do not know what is wrong. PLEASE help!

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

No sound on iMac

I installed Zorin OS 16 Core on my iMac. But unfortunately I have no sound. (It's my first time using any Linux. So I'm an absolute newbie in it.)

Here are the specification of my Mac.
iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2015), iMac 16,1
Processor: 1.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
RAM: 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
Graphic Card: Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB

When I let inxi -SMA run, the following information is shown:
System:
Host: kanrei-iMac Kernel: 5.13.0-41-generic x86_64 bits: 64
Desktop: Gnome 3.38.4 Distro: Zorin OS 16.1
Machine:
Type: Laptop System: Apple product: iMac16,1 v: 1.0
serial: <superuser/root required>
Mobo: Apple model: Mac-A369DDC4E67F1C45 v: iMac16,1
serial: <superuser/root required> UEFI: Apple v: 428.60.3.0.0
date: 10/27/2021
Audio:
Device-1: Intel Broadwell-U Audio driver: snd_hda_intel
Device-2: Intel Wildcat Point-LP High Definition Audio
driver: snd_hda_intel
Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.13.0-41-generic

I tried the following things, but nothing made a difference:

sudo alsa force-reload

sudo apt-get install --reinstall alsa-base pulseaudio

sudo alsa force-reload

Using PulseAudio. I don't see anything here which would change anything.

Using Alsamixer. I don't think it's anything wrong here. In the screenshots you can see, how it looked like when I started it and when I pressed F6 to select a sound card, how it looked there.

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
options snd_hda_intel model=mb5
(In general I get an error when using the gedit command, but it seems they saved the file either way.)

Trying out all profiles which I see in sound and pulse audio.

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=imac27
sudo reboot
(I tried out with imac24 too. And also some other endings which I saw online.)

systemctl --user restart pulseaudio
rm -r ~/.config/pulse
pulseaudio -k

sudo gedit /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-speaker.conf
Change:
[Element Headphone]
switch = off
volume = off
to:
[Element Headphone]
switch = off
volume = merge
override-map.1 = all
override-map.2 = all-left,all-right

Change:

[Element Speaker]
required-any = any
switch = mute
volume = merge
override-map.1 = all
override-map.2 = all-left,all-right

To:
[Element Speaker]
required-any = any
switch = mute
volume = off

Save and reboot.

I have no problem with having sound in the MacOS. (I have Dual Boot)
Has anyone an idea what else I could try to get that problem fixed?

Which linux for A1224? Ubuntu??

Hi folks, am reviving an old imac

iMac 20" – Early 2008
2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (E8135)

Think it only has 2Gb of ram to start with - if I am to use it will upgrade to 4gb (even 6) and an SSD.

Which Linux distro would be good to try out???

Also, can I just install by selecting USB on the startup menu (holding OPTIO/ALT during load)??? Or are there major problems installing linux when there is a Recovery partition for MaC Os already set up??

Any advice is appreciated!

Cheers!

Installation Problems on Older Macbook Pro - NEED HELP!

$

I have an older Macbook Pro 17 from early 2009. The DVD drive appears to have died after the Apple OS update that no longer supported their own internal hardware. I'm trying to revive this older laptop so my son can use it and I can't afford to buy a new system at this time. I've used Ubuntu for years and it's my preferred OS. However, I'm having some serious issues that I can not resolve. Here's what I've tried:

1. Created bootable USB drive and it will open and install the Ubuntu OS. Upon restart the system just goes to a black screen and I can do nothing at all. I've tried this with the "nomodeset" change I read about in other posts on the web. Attempted this literally 5 times and got the same result each time.

2. Using the bootable usb I made the "nomodeset" change and loaded the OEM version of the OS. This gave me a black screen, but I was able to right click with a mouse to discover that I had 2 built-in screens for the LAPTOP!! I was completely unable to access the Terminal in any way to make changes to this. I then tried #1 again.

3. After option #1 didn't work, I tried #2 again. Got the same results with the dual screen garbage. However, upon restarting the system, I am back to the black screen and unable to do anything.

I just need this to work. I'm ready to sell it for parts or smash it to bits just to make myself feel better. However, my son needs it more so I'm left asking for help. Does anyone have any way to fix these issues?

To say I hate Apple is the understatement of the century!

[lubuntu] Tinty Audio: 2007 iMac

Installed Lubuntu on 2007 iMac. The system runs well, but the audio is quite tinty sounding. In the adjustment of settings in Alsamixer I can get the audio to a better quality. But, when the volume is adjusted up/down Alsamixer resets and the audio is back to tinty.

Is there a better way to save the settings in Alsamixer or another way altogether?

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="consoleblank=60" not working anymore on iMac 2017

Hello dear Ubuntu users,

This is my first post and I am fairly new to using Ubuntu server 22.04.

Last week I installed Ubuntu server 22.04 on my iMac 27" 2017 to run a Minecraft server. After some issues with the network driver I was finally able to get it properly running. Since it is an iMac I searched for an option to have the display power off since I don't use it that often since I am using SSH and the iMac is beneath my desk. After a few Google searches I found out I could edit a GRUB file so the display powers off after 60 seconds. I edited the file "/etc/default/grub" and added the following line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="consoleblank=60"

This worked perfectly for a week, until yesterday.

Yesterday my Ziggo (Dutch ISP) router/modem restarted during a Minecraft session and I first thought it had to do with my iMac. I pressed the power button of my iMac shortly which resulted in a shutdown and powered it on again. Since then the display won't power off after 60 seconds, it always stays on and I don't know how I could resolve this. I restarted the iMac a couple of times, edited and updated the GRUB file, disconnected the power cable of the iMac, but the issue remains. I don't know how after a reboot the display won't behave the way intended. Does anyone know how I could resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Until recently my quite old macbook pro...

Intel® Core™ i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 4
Intel® HD Graphics 4000 (IVB GT2)
Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS only

...was working fine, if a little hot and slow to boot (bright white screen)

I now get the following message before the Ubuntu desktop appears:

Code:

[ 0.0791011 DMAR-IR: [Firmware Bug]: ioapic 2 has no mapping iommu, interrupt remapping will be disabled [ 0.156165] ACPI Error: Needed type [Reference], found [Integer] 00000000f956

  /dev/sda2: clean, 300962/30498816 files, 9495857/121965056 blocks

So this looks like a BIOS issue and at this point I'm lost. So any advice on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

No sound on HDMI connected to lightning port on Macbook Pro A1286

Hi,

I'm new to Ubuntu. I've just installed 22.04 with desktop on my old macbook which I plan to use as an HTPC. My macbook pro is an old A1286. Everything works great with one exception. I have HD video working with the HDMI connection but there is no sound. I also don´t have the HDMI connection listed in the sound options when I click it. My TV doesn´t have a separate audio input associated with the video input so using the audio out on the mackbook is not an option.

Can someone help me?

Thanks

Ubuntu on MacBook Pro?

Hi Team

I am looking at getting rid of the MacOS "Mojave" on my 2015 MBP, and replacing it with Linux of some flavor. The Apple ecosystem has become unacceptably exclusive since BigSur/Apple Silicon :-P
I have run Fedora off and on over the years, most recently Fedora 34, on a Lenovo "Yoga" laptop last year; maybe the year before last, now. I recently wiped that machine clean to install Win7 in support of some OBDII diagnostic software. The Lenovo is a nice little laptop, but its 12in display is nowhere near as visually attractive as the MacBook Pro "Retina" screen. The Fedora install was OK, and very configurable, but also fairly challenging, or at least that was my perception after struggling with it for several months.
I have booted a "Live" Ubuntu (probably an outdated image) on my MBP, and it seems happy with the hardware environment, but I haven't really done much with it beyond that. WiFi works.
At a first glance, as opposed to Fedora, Ubuntu appears to be a lot more usable, right out of the box. Anybody here have experience with a recent Fedora distro and able to offer commentary? Another issue that might pop up is printer support/color management. I have a couple of Epson "Fine Art" printers; a StylusPro 7890, and a SureColor P-800. Honestly, I don't expect the same support as was available in MacOS, but it would be nice if there was something that allowed for print color management (*.icc profiles). I don't recall seeing anything in Gimp, but that doesn't mean it isn't there; Gimp is complex. Does anybody happen to know? It isn't the end of the world if not; I can do it on the Win7 box, but it would be nice if I didn't have to. Also, I have a virtual WinXP (MacOS "VMWare Fusion" created) that I would like to have access to. I seem to recall "VirtualBox" under Fedora not being able to open the VMWare machine. Am I just out of luck on that score? Also, Wine. How well does Wine work under Ubuntu? Anyone tried to get Kindle for PC to run under Wine on Ubuntu? I was eventually able to get it to go under Wine on Fedora, but it was a severe PITA, and fragile. Seems like I have read that it works better under Ubuntu; does anyone know?
Finally, are there any glaring issues with putting Ubuntu on a Mac as the primary/only OS? I really don't want to mess with Bootcamp, thanks anyway. Been there, Done that, Didn't have much fun. Didn't get a T-shirt, either :-D

Any comments greatly appreciated! TIA, Steve (and George, The Mule)
