Ubuntu freezing.

$

I have installed Ubuntu20.04.03 desktop-amd.64 , minimal install, onto a mid 2009 Mac Book Pro 17 inch. I used a WiFi Dongle to allow it online during install. And the only thing on SSD is Ubuntu. I did the first updates. Seems to freeze while doing things online, only allowing me to move around cursor, and doing that better with a USB mouse.

I suspect part of this is related to WiFi, and some auto updates feature.

I understand the part about not trying to use Firefox. It says use Chromium, which to me translates to Google Chrome.

The thing goes off refusing to do anything for long periods. Leading to a hard Power Off. Not helpful to the further cause of using Ubuntu.

Is there a good way to be sure Ubuntu is 'functional' after I did a hard power off, except to reinstall.

I only need this for a short project. I hate to spend hours just trying things. My project requires either Debian or a Derivative. Ubuntu grades high on this. Perhaps I messed up by not specifying that I must login at the beginning. Or that I let it install Ubuntu rather than specifying Ubuntu64. Or I might try another Dongle, this one might be getting old.

Instructions about holding down keys to get out of freeze doesn't relate to keys I have. Be nice if Ubuntu told me what it was doing, while not allowing me to do anything else. That it is not permanently frozen.

Thanks for any advice

Ubuntu as Time Machine server

Hello,

I want to use a pc running Ubuntu 20.04 as a Time Machine server.

I installed netatalk and populated the /etc/netatalk/afp.conf file as follows:

Code:

[Global]log level = default:warn
log file = /var/log/afpd.log
hosts allow = 192.168.1.1/24
spotlight = yes

[TimeMachine]
# is this machine a time machine?
time machine = yes
# directory for time machine data on server
path = /home/francois/system_backup/TimeMachine
# the max size of the data folder (in Mb)
vol size limit = 980000
# users with access to time machine
valid users = francois

I managed to backup my MacBook but when I want to restore it from recovery mode, connection to the Time Machine server is not possible.
I have an error message telling me to contact my system administrator.

How to configure the server to be able to connect from the recovery mode of the MacBook?

Thanks for your help.

[ubuntu] MACPRO 2.1 2006 - lag

Hello guys

I just managed to install ubunto on my macpro 2.1 2006 and I experience lot of lags and mouse freeze (for half a second) specialy with chrome and brave browsers.
Also the download/upload speed is not stable very much, it gets fast and then I see it hangs for 1~2 seconds and then starts again.

I used ubuntu-20.04-desktop-amd64-mac-mattgadient.com.iso from https://mattgadient.com/linux-dvd-im...e-2006-models/

Can you please drop me an idea what could be the problem? Maybe because of the standard video card?

My macpro is dual CPU with 12 GB of ram

[ubuntu] Can not boot from my USB (Macbook Pro)

I have a Macbook Pro (16inch 2019 version), and my goal is to have a dual boot system by installing Ubuntu 20.10.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to boot the computer from my ubuntu enabled USB drive. I would hold the "option" button while starting, and then see two options, my Mac OS hard disk and a EPI disk. I would choose the 2nd choice and let it boot from there. No matter how long I waited, I can only saw a black screen. I did hear some noise in the background though.

I tested the USB stick with my other computer (Dell XPS laptop), and it worked fine. I also logged into the Recovery mode (Command + R) and change the setting to allow bootable from external devices.

I wonder if anyone has success in booting from a USB stick on their Macbook Pro laptops?

Many thanks!

After many tries I have gotten my ipad mounted in ubuntu 20.04 and it shows a bunch of foldersScreenshot_2021-12-27_11-25-40.png but none of my ipad documents. I can't tell where the documents are as the ipad gives no info on that it is just called files. I am attaching a screenshot of the folders showing in my ipad when mounted in ubuntu. I looked through every folder and subfolder and none of my documents on the ipad are there

Huawei Matebook 13s 2021 speaker issue

Tried both 20.04 and 21.10. On a Huawei Matebook 13s 2021 laptop, speaker is treated as a headphone. When the headphone is plugged in, the speaker and the headphone are playing sound at the same time. When the headphone is removed, the speaker doesn't play sound. What is more interesting: when headphone is unplugged, and select "Headphones(unplugged)" as the output from PulseAudio Volume Control, the speaker works! So it looks like speaker is treated as a headphone. Is there a way to redirect/reconfigure it as the speaker? Thank you in advance.

After moving home partition - suspend/resume device

Good day,
I have an old iMac 12 and after moving /home to a new partition the boot is very slow, with 'gave up waiting for suspend/resume device" root / sda2.

I am unable to access grub. I do not think it uses grub to boot. How will I be able to change the boot menu/rule for sda2 suspend/resume

I am using ubuntu 20.04 LTS

I tried to disable resume uncommenting RESUME=none in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume and running sudo update-initramfs -u -k all.

Greetings all!

I have already tried every iteration of "sudo apt/apt-get update/clean/autoclean etc" that I know (with correct syntax)
Any ideas or is this simply an ARM limitation as to not having the packages to support?

Thanks and have a Happy New Year!

[ubuntu] Audio Video sync issue different in multiple browsers

I am running Ubuntu 20.04 on a MBP m1 using UTM. Everything works great except for the audio and visual sync issues. In chromium its just out of sync in firefox it stutters as if its trying to always sync the two. I have tried, installing flash (but having issues with ARM64), uninstalling and reinstalling audio drivers, downloading pulseaudio and setting latency adjustments (delay is too large to help much), and even the different audio options UTM itself. At this point im thinking its just an issue with UTM and ARM64. Any insight would be helpful im finding it hard to follow the solutions online due a lot of the packages not working on ARM64.

Thanks, Owen

[server] Auto Screensaver... logged in or not?

I've Ubuntu Server with no X, no X11, no X.org, and certainly not Wayland. The dang thing is (don't judge) a 2009 iMac that I got for $100. Obviously, I cannot power off the monitor without powering off the whole thing. So, I looked into how to avoid screen burn-in...

There was a lot about a software shutdown of the screen. This works on other hardware, but unfortunately it makes the screen Mac-bootup-EFI-white on my system.

I found some great tips for console based screensavers. My favorite (after "apt install bsdgames") is "/usr/games/worms -d 190 -n 4". Second is "/usr/games/rain -d 190". Those work just fine if I invoke them manually. How do I make such a thing activate every X minutes whether or not I'm logged in, even if I have never logged in? since boot? I don't want "Login:" nor "myhost $" nor "myhost #" burned into my screen even if I forget to start the screensaver before bed.

Yes I need the damned thing on all the time. I installed BIND so that I can have private DNS behind my router. If this thing goes down then no DNS unless I use a secondary. In my experience, secondary DNS *sucks* because primary DNS must time out first.

Please help me save my console screen under every circumstance when it's idle for X minutes. Shut the screen off. Run a console screensaver. I don't care as long as I avoid burn-in (and as long as it doesn't turn pure white).

[all variants] Ubuntu on an old iMac (don't judge, it was only US$100)

THIS DOES NOT BELONG IN APPLE HARDWARE - I only mention iMac because it is an all-in-one.

I did have Ubuntu working on this system. I always start with server, and work my way up from there, installing (if I want graphics) lubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop or other stuff myself.

Anyway, on this 2009 iMac, Ubuntu once installed and worked. It was great because I could check around with everything from raw Fluxbox to MATE to KDE, and so forth without compromising my main computer or messing around with VM's.

I tried BSD's, CentOS, and pure Debian. Some won't install. Others don't work with the accursed Broadcom wifi even if I follow the instructions to the letter.

Ubuntu, and only Ubuntu works and also works with Broadcom b43 junk. Except I've jacked up my Ubuntu system, reformatted it UFS and then ZFS. Now I need to start from scratch...

This time, no matter if I use Rufus, Unetbootin, or BalenaEtcher, GRUB gives me a menu. I hit ENTER to "Install Ubuntu". Then blackness. Nothing. I left it running for an hour. Nothing.

Why could I install Ubuntu last week, but not today? Am I forgetting something that I had done differently?

Can anyone help?

I have two very nice MBP systems (late 2018 and early 2019) that I would like to run Ubuntu on, solo boot.
Logging my efforts and contributing to Apple Hardware Users is a no brainer. The effort will go faster if I can find like-minded developers to join me or lead me.
Fwiw, I was able to follow one guide with success but have not been able to repeat it so I know it can be done.
Left to my own devices, I will continue following whatever leads I find on the Net until I get to yes or I understand why it cannot be done ... yet.

I'm attempting to perform the install (to an external USB-C disk) described in the title.

It seems no matter what I try, I get a black screen shortly after selecting my external disk to boot from.

I tried copying the .iso to my little USB flash drive using dd on macOS or cp on Linux. I also tried converting the .iso to .img using:
hdiutil convert ubuntu-21.10-desktop-amd64.iso -format UDRW -o ubuntu-21.10-desktop-amd64.img
...but I still get a black screen when I try to boot from it. BTW, I got a .img.dmg file, not a .img file, and dd'd that.

What do I need to do to initiate the install process?

Thanks!

Problem with the external mic (MacBook)

Hello

A few weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 20 on my MacBook Pro. The truth is that it works great, but I have a small problem: the external microphone does not work for me. As is known, Macs have the same Jack input for headphones and microphone. The thing is that when I plug in the microphone, Ubuntu recognizes it as a headphone. The same thing happens if I connect a headset with a microphone: it recognizes the headset, but not the microphone.

On the web I have found some solutions, such as modifying the alsa-base-conf file or trying pavucontrol. The latter recognizes the microphone but says that it is not connected.

Anyway. If anyone has an idea, it would be great for me.

All the best

Hi, I just installed Ubuntu on my iMac and have been enjoying it so far. However, there seems to be no audio on the system.
lspci lists the audio device as "Intel Corporation 100 Series/c230 Series Chipset family HD Controller (rev 31)"

I tried various fixes but not seem to have worked and the dummy output remains.
Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

So been banging my head and searching around and have yet to locate any tips/tricks.

Got a A2442 Macbook Pro and wanting to install Ubuntu 21.10 on it however it seems as when getting to the startup options, the device fails to see the USB with the ISO loaded on it. Has anyone had any success yet with this hardware/OS installation?
